In recognition of her active service to the students in the Model U.N. program and the school community, SPFHS librarian Lorraine Sleeper was awarded the YMCA Model U.N. Gretta Roffman Ostrovsky Service to Youth Award on January 6 at the Model U.N. Conference held in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Sleeper has been involved with Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School's Model U.N. program for nine years and was the only adviser to win this award at the conference. "I was shocked that I won the award," said Sleeper. "There are a lot of wonderful people involved in the Model U.N. Program; therefore, I feel very honored they selected me."

The conference gave students the chance to debate international issues and resolve conflicts as a representative of the country they were assigned.

Sleeper took charge of selecting outstanding position papers written by the delegates and served as an adviser to the economics and finance committee.

"[The students] were well prepared and have a great attitude, which is a clear reflection of Mrs. Sleeper's leadership," said Curtis Myers, director of the YMCA Model U.N. program. "She is well respected and serves youth with real compassion."
